Nicholas II was born in Tsarskoye Selo on 6 May (see s.) 1868 and received his education, under the guidance of General G. G. Danilovič, from a college of eminent scientists and politicians. After having accompanied his father several times on the journeys he made through the regions of the empire, in October 1890 the prince embarked on a long journey to the East, through Egypt, India and China to Japan.
